Since I have been practicing psychotherapy, I have heard all kinds of stories from clients (and strangers! When a stranger hears about my vocation, they spill!) about bad therapists. I’ve heard of therapists who answer their phone during session, therapists who shame clients, and one time a client told me she left her previous therapist because he fell asleep during session.
I. Just. Can’t.
And, why don’t therapists return phone calls? (In this case, when you are trying to schedule your initial appointment.) This one gets my goat. Why is it SO hard to find a good therapist? (And don’t get me started on why therapists don’t/can’t take insurance!)
A good fit is essential. But, keep in mind: what might be a “good fit” for you may be different than a “good fit” for your friend. I prefer my therapist show some empathy, while one of my friends says empathy is not as important; she prefers therapists who are very direct.
