Have you ever known someone who radiates nothing but sunshine, rainbows, and unicorns? It is GREAT (and a life skill, really) to be able to find the silver lining in all situations. It is equally, if not more, important that you learn how to “sit” with negative emotions and situations and also allow other people to be sad, angry, disappointed, etc. Don’t stuff your feelings and encourage other people to stuff theirs!
“Toxic positivity is a problem because sitting on your issues and ignoring them is never a good thing. It makes them escalate, and you never address what makes you unhappy. A study has found that accepting and not rejecting our negative emotions actually helps us better defuse them and leads to fewer negative emotions over time. This in turn causes better overall psychological health.”
